Plan 14: Stove ⇌ Jet Engine (2021)

Painting, video installation

Commisioned by the exhibition: GEO-DESIGN: BUDGET AIRLINES. in Van Abbe Museum.

Th is based on the research of the carbon offset scheme which portable cookstoves play the cucial role. This scheme uses the voluntary carbon market to purchase the right to emit CO2 through credits that financially support the carbon reduction project-- some of them are distributing and encouraging the use of improved portable cookstoves to underdeveloped regions in developing countries. It is a strategy of budget airlines to brandish their green reputations, to ease the environmental concerns of its passengers.

The artists’ research found at least 13 similar projects invested in by 15 budget airlines. The dimensions of power are exponential: Through the voluntary carbon market, the small-scale fuel burning that powers the daily meal preparation through open-source technology in some of the poorest regions in the world, is forming a supply chain with the large-scale fuel burning that powers jet engines patented by some of the world’s most powerful businesses.

Plan 14: Stove ⇌ Jet Engine animates this recursive loop between jet engine and cookstove by speculating on a metamorphosis between the two technologies. It presents a contemporary mythology for the ambiguous nature of carbon offset strategy, through a 5-channel video that shows the research of the carbon ooffset supply chain, a narrative painting about people and their environment around carbon offset, and an animation that shows 10 stages of evolution processes from stove to jet engine.
