Where comes MULAN?(2024-ongoing)
site specific performance and video
collaborated with Tianyi Zheng, Jemmy Chen
it springs from a well-known but simple Chinese folklore -- Mulan that has shaped rural/urban identity, cultural identity, urban design and landscapes, local tourism, political representations in China, and more specifically in Huangpi, Wuhan, which is the hometown of both Mulan (allegedly), and visual artist Tianyi. We set out to explore the intricacies between folklore and the development of Huangpi since the 1970s, but more importantly, we would like to re-imagine political reality and gender identity through thinking with
the story of Mulan.
These questions continue to shape our journey: How can the elasticity of the image of Mulan creates (re)imagination of and (re) connections within Huangpi’s rural/tourism development? Can we discuss the issue of cultural identity crisis (both geological and historical) through personal queer identity struggles?
